Make sure you take the time to research the species you want before you get one. Start by making a list of reasons you want a bird and a list of traits that are important to you. Compare species of birds to narrow down your list to a few that meet your requirements, or call us for our recommendations. Several questions to take into consideration include the following:
Why do you want a bird? As a pet? As a companion to another bird?
Where will the bird's cage go? How large of a cage will "fit" into your home?
How much noise is acceptable to you, the family, and the neighbors? No bird is perfectly quiet, but some species are quieter than others!
How much time are you willing to commit to the bird on a daily basis? Birds range in friendliness from not wanting to be touched (like finches) to the Velcro like attitude of some Cockatoos. Many need playtime and socialization, some need food preparation.
How long do you want the bird around? Finches live about four years; Budgie's, seven years; Cockatoos, forty years; an Amazon or African Grey, up to fifty or more years. Make sure you plan for the bird's entire life. This means including for the bird's future care in your will.
How much are you willing to spend up front for a bird, the cage and accessories? Prices range from several dollars for a small Finch or Budgerigar to several thousand dollars for a Hyacinth Macaw. Bargain hunting is usually a bad idea when it comes to birds. The prices reflect the labor that goes into raising the babies, hand-feeding, training and socializing so this is no time to cut corners.
How much are you willing to spend on food, veterinary care, and toys?
Who will watch the bird while you are on vacation with the family? (K & K Parrots will board birds)
